The Russian Story

.

While researching the SHERGOLD family in England I was contacted in the Spring of 1994 by a Margit Wager of Stockholm, Sweden asking if we were related, as her mother had been born a SHERGOLD in Archangel, Russia.  That was the first time I heard of the Russian SHERGOLDs. Subsequent discussions with other UK SHERGOLD researchers and the Leeds University Russian Archive led to me writing to two other 'survivors' of that pre-1917 international community in Archangel then living in the UK and in their nineties. They responded with much enthusiasm and even forwarded my letters to other people with an interest in these families.

The total response was very exciting and, as I have always had a special interest in Russia, of very real interest to me. Margit's own knowledge of survivors was limited to an awareness of her three aunts' families, one now living in the US and two in Germany. Her knowledge of the Archangel lifestyle was gleaned from her mother's memories and from a long letter that her mother had written in 1984 to her nephew in the US. (Her mother had believed that her Grandfather John was the first Russian  Shergold but we now believe there were at least one if not two previous generations.)

This information was the start, and from the subsequent letters I received I was able to establish details of many more families with links to the Archangel SHERGOLDs and have even been in contact with an Alexander Shergold who is today a successful businessman living in Archangel. The following multinational surnames appear in my database. In putting together the data I have to add my very special thanks to the following people. Margit Wager of Stockholm, Sweden.

The late Eugenie Fraser of Edinburgh, Scotland.  Author of 'The House By The Dvina' Harald Lindes of Maryland, U.S.A. Nicholai Shumiloff of the Archangel Region State Archives. Ted Carr of Windsor, England. Sergei Gernet of Archangel, Russia. Richard Davies of the Leeds Russian Archive, England. Clive Luhrs of Kirkstall, England. Alexander Shergold of Archangel, Russia. Jean Shergold (unrelated) of Hedge End, England.

They have all provided me with, or pointed me to, sources of information from which I have extracted the names, relationships and dates to make up my  RUSSIA.GED database Needless to say I am happy to receive corrections and additional data. The database is contantly being updated and corrected. michael.shergold@clara.net
